History:

Since the development of formal degree plans in Homeland and National Security at the Angelo State University Center for Security Studies in the Summer of 2010, discussions among faculty and students were held for the purpose of seeking means to advance the knowledge gained. It was decided that worthwhile contributions could be made to better influence the new discipline by publicizing noteworthy, academic and scholarly coursework by students enrolled in the new programs. In the Fall of 2013, a proposal to develop a student-led, peer-reviewed electronic journal was presented by a faculty member to the program director. The proposal was approved. Students interested in serving as the executive and managing directors were selected for service as peer reviewers. The students developed administrative guidelines and structured a process for calling for papers, reviewing submissions, and engaging in critical dialogue with authors to publish robust papers written for the purpose of advancing policy, practice, research and theory in homeland and national security.

Scope:

The original focus and scope of the journal is to seek robust and academic publication of original student research on any issue, problem, concern, or opinion originating from their coursework at the ASU CSS. The written work would meet the publication’s theme and contribute toward advancing knowledge in homeland and national security. Papers that substantially contribute to the debate of issues necessary to promote a higher level of understanding of the theories, policies, practices, or research related to homeland and national security would also be accepted for review and consideration. Examples include questions within the domain of Criminal Justice, Intelligence Studies, Culture and Society, Homeland and Border Security, and National Security.

The Journal of Homeland and National Security Perspectives editors will rely upon the Creative Commons license.

Competing interest guidelines:

Only original works will be accepted, and a declaration should be made by the submitting author whether the article is submitted to another journal. Such a submission will not be considered for inclusion within the Journal of Homeland and National Security Perspectives.

Publication frequency:

The editors of the Journal of Homeland and National Security Perspectives will publish student papers in the Spring and Fall of each year.

All submissions will become the property of the Editors and feedback will be provided to each author regarding their submission and whether it is accepted for publication. A call for papers will be made at least biannually and at least 30 days will be allowed for authors to submit their papers. Student editors will make the final decision on article selection, and nothing shall preclude an author from resubmitting papers for future publications.
